Let's learn from the youth

On July 8, nearly 10 kids – all of them not even the age of 18 – stood outside a Clovis (Calif.) police station to pray for our nation. Then last night, the ESPN ESPY committee honored former high school student-athlete Zavieon Dobson from Knoxville (Tenn.) for not his athletic accomplishments, but for his heroism by shielding three girls from gunfire as the late Dobson received the prestigious Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

We should take a lesson from our youth, because their stories told me this: they showed more maturity and class than most adults in the past year.

Their actions are proof that maturity is not based on age, it’s based on decision making. Unfortunately, I’ve come across people as young as I am, older than I am and even my age who have made costly decisions that range from trying drugs, making insensitive remarks, using their hands to harm others or also, acting self-righteous in public venues or on social media sites.

Regarding the latter, the keyboard warriors should definitely spend more time researching Dobson or taking a lesson from the Clovis kids. Their rants won’t change America’s current ways, nor change themselves because politicians do not follow their Twitter accounts or friend them on Facebook. God won’t likely hear their pleas either because God doesn’t have Twitter or Facebook. And if he does, it’s likely a parody account.

I salute these young people for taking an important stand. I love it when someone who isn’t 18-years-old proves adults wrong by showing more class and maturity.

I will end this post by sharing Philippians 4:8-9 which states:
